Having graduated with a degree in Latin American Studies with a focus on Brazil, I had seen capoeira in various settings but never thought too much about it.  I moved to the Bay Area in 2010 to serve as an AmeriCorps*VISTA, and this is when “capoeira me chamou.”  As I was walking home one day, I heard a strangely familiar sound coming from the end of a long hallway off of Piedmont Avenue.  I followed the sounds into a beautiful, art-filled space where people were singing and moving in a joyful way.  Even though I didn’t understand what I was observing, I felt capoeira calling me to come play.

MariActionOver the years, capoeira has become one of my highest forms of self expression, my teacher of life lessons, and my community.  It is an honor and a whole lot of fun to welcome new students to capoeira!
